Boat and Car Detailing FAQ

Boat and car detailing FAQ from Doctor Detail in Gibsonton, FL. Straight answers on cost, oxidation, salt, ceramic coating, mobile service, and tint.

The questions boat and car owners ask the Doctor most, each answered on its own page. Still not sure? Call or text (813) 652-4015.

  1. Q 01How much does boat detailing cost?Boat detailing cost depends on three things: the size of the boat, its condition, and the work it needs. A maintenance wash costs far less than oxidation removal and a ceramic coating. Doctor Detail looks at the boat and gives you a free quote before any work begins, with a 30% deposit to book.
  2. Q 02How often should you detail a boat in Florida? In Florida, rinse your boat with fresh water after every saltwater trip, wash it on a regular schedule, and keep the gelcoat protected with wax, sealant, or ceramic coating. Plan a full detail whenever the protection wears off or oxidation starts. How often depends on how much the boat runs and where it is kept.
  3. Q 03Is marine ceramic coating worth it?For a boat that lives in the Florida sun, a marine ceramic coating is usually worth it. It protects gelcoat from UV and salt far longer than wax, slows oxidation, and makes washing much easier. It costs more up front and needs the gelcoat corrected first. The Doctor is a certified Ceramic Pro and System X installer.
  4. Q 04What causes boat oxidation?Boat oxidation is caused mainly by UV light breaking down the surface of the gelcoat. Salt, heat, and pollution speed it up, and missing wax or coating leaves the gelcoat exposed. The result is a chalky, faded finish. It can be polished off and then prevented with regular protection.
  5. Q 05How is oxidation removed from gelcoat?Oxidation is removed from gelcoat in four steps. The hull is washed and decontaminated. A machine compound cuts away the chalky layer. A polish refines the surface back to a gloss. Then wax, sealant, or ceramic coating protects it. Heavier oxidation takes more passes and more time.
  6. Q 06Do you come to my dock, driveway, or marina?Yes. Doctor Detail is mobile. The Doctor comes to your dock, your driveway, or your marina across Gibsonton, Riverview, Apollo Beach, Ruskin, Brandon, Sun City Center, Tampa, Seffner, and Zephyrhills. Boats on a lift, at a slip, or on a trailer all work. You get a free quote before any work begins.
  7. Q 07How long does a ceramic coating take?A full paint or gelcoat correction and ceramic coating can take up to three days at Doctor Detail. Most of that time is preparation: washing, decontamination, and correcting the surface, because the coating locks in whatever is under it. Size and condition decide the exact time, and the Doctor confirms it with your quote.
  8. Q 08Wax or ceramic coating on a boat?Wax is cheaper, easy to apply, and simple to refresh, but it wears off quickly in the Florida sun. A ceramic coating costs more and needs the gelcoat corrected first, but it lasts far longer and makes washing much easier. For a boat you keep in the sun, ceramic usually wins.
  9. Q 09How do you get salt buildup off a boat?To remove salt buildup from a boat, rinse with fresh water after every saltwater trip, then wash with a marine-safe soap. Use soft brushes on the non-skid, rail bases, hardware, and vinyl seams where salt hides. Rinse well and dry. Heavy buildup needs a full salt removal.
  10. Q 10Does ceramic window tint keep a car cooler?Yes. Ceramic window tint keeps a car cooler by blocking a large share of the sun's heat and UV at the glass, without the metallic, mirrored look of older films. The cabin heats up more slowly and the interior fades less. Doctor Detail installs ceramic film as a certified window tinting installer.
