Ceramic coating costs more up front than wax, so it is fair to ask whether it pays off. For a boat in the Tampa Bay sun, the case is strong. Here is why, and when it is not the right call.
Short answer
Should you ceramic coat your boat?
For a boat that lives in the Florida sun, a marine ceramic coating is usually worth it. It protects gelcoat from UV and salt far longer than wax, slows oxidation, and makes washing much easier. It costs more up front and needs the gelcoat corrected first. The Doctor is a certified Ceramic Pro and System X installer.
What you get
A ceramic coating bonds to the gelcoat and cures into a hard, slick layer. UV light, salt, and staining hit the coating instead of the finish. Water beads and rolls off, and dirt rinses away with much less scrubbing.
The biggest win for most owners is time. A coated boat goes much longer between polishing jobs, so you stop paying to remove the same oxidation every season.
What it costs you
A coating takes more work than wax. The gelcoat has to be fully corrected first, because the coating locks in whatever is under it. A full correction and coating can take up to three days, depending on the boat. It also takes a 30% deposit to book, like all detailing work.
When it is worth it
Coating makes the most sense for a boat you plan to keep, a boat that lives in the water or in the sun, and a boat whose gelcoat is still in good enough shape to correct well. It also makes sense right after oxidation removal, when the gelcoat is at its best.
Questions to ask yourself
How long do you plan to keep the boat? Does it live in the water or in the sun? Are you tired of paying to remove oxidation every season? Would easier washing make a difference to you? If most of the answers point to long-term ownership and sun exposure, coating is likely worth it.
When wax may be enough
If you plan to sell the boat soon, or it sits under a cover most of the year, a good wax or sealant may cover your needs. The Doctor recommends one or the other based on the boat in front of him, not on what costs more.

Does a coated boat still need washing?
Yes. Regular washing keeps salt and grime from building up on the coating, so it keeps working.
