People are often surprised that a ceramic coating is a multi-day job. The coating itself goes on fairly fast. The time goes into the prep that makes it look right.

Short answer

Why does ceramic coating take days?

A full paint or gelcoat correction and ceramic coating can take up to three days at Doctor Detail. Most of that time is preparation: washing, decontamination, and correcting the surface, because the coating locks in whatever is under it. Size and condition decide the exact time, and the Doctor confirms it with your quote.

Where the time goes

A coating job runs in stages. The surface is washed and decontaminated. Then it is corrected: oxidation removed on a boat, swirl marks and water spots on a car. Then the surface is prepped so the coating bonds. Only then does the coating go on.

Skipping or rushing the correction is the most common reason a coating looks disappointing. The coating makes the finish under it glossier and harder. It does not fix it.

What changes the time

Size is the obvious factor: a large boat or a full-size truck has more surface than a coupe. Condition matters as much. A hull with heavy oxidation or paint with deep swirls takes longer to correct than a well-kept finish.

After the coating

Coatings need time to cure. The Doctor gives you care tips for the first days after the job, like keeping the surface dry and skipping harsh soaps. After that, regular gentle washing keeps the coating performing.

Planning around the job

Because a coating can take up to three days, pick a window when you will not need the boat or car. Ask the Doctor about the schedule when he quotes, and plan any trips around it. The wait pays off in protection that lasts far longer than wax.

Does a coating need correction first?
